Reports suggest that Metallica are edging closer to one of the most ambitious live projects of their career. According to a new report from the UK press, the band is said to be “90 percent” through negotiations for a Las Vegas Sphere residency planned for 2027, following the conclusion of their massive M72 world tour in mid 2026.

While no official confirmation has been made, sources claim that discussions with Sphere executives and technical teams are already well underway. The venue, known for its fully immersive visuals and cutting edge audio technology, has reportedly hosted multiple meetings with Metallica’s management and production staff to explore what a show could look like inside the futuristic space.

The idea is far from new. Over the past year, several members of the band have openly expressed their fascination with the Sphere and its creative possibilities. Drummer Lars Ulrich previously described the venue as “the beginning of another chapter in live performances” after attending U2’s opening night residency, admitting he would “love” to see Metallica take on the challenge once touring commitments are fulfilled.

Bassist Robert Trujillo has also spoken enthusiastically about the concept, noting that Metallica’s music naturally lends itself to a highly visual experience. He highlighted instrumental tracks like “Orion” as examples of songs that could be transformed into something entirely new within the Sphere’s wraparound environment.

Guitarist Kirk Hammett echoed similar thoughts in a 2025 interview, praising the venue as a glimpse into the future of live entertainment and a space where technology and music fully converge.

The Las Vegas Sphere, which opened in 2023, has already hosted high profile residencies from U2, Phish, Dead & Company and The Eagles. If the deal moves forward, Metallica would become the first heavy metal band to headline a residency at the venue, marking another milestone in their long history of pushing live production boundaries.

For now, the band remains focused on completing the remaining M72 tour dates, and no contracts have been officially signed. Still, with multiple band members publicly embracing the idea and reports suggesting negotiations are nearing the finish line, Metallica at the Sphere is starting to feel less like speculation and more like an inevitable next step.
